The NADE Administrative SPIN group met on February 16, 2006
during the NADE Conference in Philadelphia, PA. Cynthia Craig and Mitchel
Burchfield co-chaired the meeting. Sue Cain and Mitchel will co-chair
the SPIN next year. Elaine suggested and it was agreed that we would
develop a structure for the SPIN group during this year. We will look
at the "administrative" structures of other SPINs and attempt
to formalize the structure of this group.
- The purpose and mission of the Administrative SPIN were discussed
and briefly reviewed. Below you will find the purpose and mission
of this group.
The purpose of the Administrative SPIN is to provide opportunities
through conference meetings, networking, and correspondence for
members to meet and interact with other professionals interested
in issues that impact administrators and the developmental education
programs they lead. This SPIN group allows professionals to network
at the NADE conference and through correspondence to address the
issues facing colleagues. The SPIN group offers a professional avenue
for growth by increasing interaction among the SPIN group members.
The mission of NADE's Administrative SPIN is to:
- facilitate communication between administrators of developmental
education programs through opportunities for networking at conferences
and meetings, correspondences, and a SPIN newsletter;
- provide a forum for administrators of developmental education
programs to discuss ways to improve the theory and best practices
across all spectrums of developmental education programs;
- seek out and examine programs that train developmental educators;
- promote the professional development, training, and education
of all developmental educators - full-time and adjunct faculty
as well as administrators; and
- stay abreast of the latest research impacting developmental
education programs and the teaching/learning process as well
as available outside funding sources and to disseminate that
information to the Administrative SPIN membership.
- Mary Coy will continue as the Administrative SPIN Newsletter
editor. If you have articles that would be of interest to others,
please submit them to the Newsletter. We are all doing exciting
work on our campuses and this can be published in the Newsletter.
- Chuck Folsom will continue to update the website for us. Our
thanks go to Chuck for creating and maintaining the website.
Again, please contact him as information updates are needed.
- We discussed the importance of looking at the NADE Certification
Program for the developmental education programs on our campuses
because of the need to create a "culture of evidence"
for our program successes.
- The best news is of course saved for last! This year both an
Administrative SPIN sponsored concurrent session and a poster session
are being presented at NADE. Next year Kathy Habeur and Elaine Elledge
will step to the plate and do a session on the importance of academic
advising programs for students with developmental needs. The topic
was selected based on the advising issues we found at our individual
institutions and the importance of good advising programs for students
with developmental needs. Another topic of discussion and perhaps
future presentations was educational support services for students
with developmental needs. Following is a little information about
the NADE 2006 Administrative SPIN sponsored sessions.
- The concurrent session "Creating a Teaching and Learning
Environment" encompassed effective training techniques
for instructors of students with developmental needs. Sue Cain,
Josette Ahlering, Nellie Boyd, and Bettye Walsh represented
the Administrative SPIN and discussed the key components, techniques,
guidelines and best practices for creating effective instructor
training programs.
- The poster session was entitled "Adjunct Developmental
Instructors: Issues and Answers" and lead by Mitchel Burchfield.
This session presented the best practices of recruitment, retention,
and professional development for adjunct instructors and local,
state, and national policies that effect adjunct faculty.
